Overview
Accept debit and credit payments in person using the Jobber Card Reader.
The card reader is a device exclusive to Jobber Payments, so you’ll need to sign up for Jobber Payments. It’s free to sign up for, and you only pay a small fee on each transaction. The card reader pairs with the Jobber app and can be used to collect deposits on quotes as well as invoice payments.
The Jobber card reader allows you to quickly, easily, and securely take cards in person using the mobile app. Since this is a card-present transaction, we are able to lower fees for the transactions you process through Jobber Payments using the card reader. The card reader accepts credit cards (swipe, tap, and chip), Apple Pay, and Google Pay.
To view your Jobber Payments rate, navigate to the Gear Icon > Setting > Jobber Payments. Your Jobber Payments rate appears at the top of the page and your rate for transactions processed with a card reader will appear in the card reader section.
Note: the card reader is currently only available in the United States. All card reader sales are final.
Order a card reader
To order a card reader, go to the Gear Icon > Settings > Jobber Payments. From the Card readers section, select Buy Card Reader to go to our card reader store where you can make your card reader purchase. Each user does not need to have their own device, so if your users work in teams they could share a card reader.
The rate that appears in the Card reader section are the fees that you would pay on transactions processed using the card reader.
Set up your card reader
Bluetooth will need to be enabled on mobile device to use the card reader, however you should not pair the card reader with Bluetooth in your settings. Instead pair it in the app when asked. Wifi isn't needed to use the card reader itself, but you do need to have an internet connection to use the Jobber app so you will need to make sure that you have an internet connection to be able to collect payment.
1. Turn the card reader on. There is a power button on the right side of the device.
Note: Once your device's Bluetooth and the card reader are both turned on, the card reader will now appear as a payment method for collecting payments, however there is still some set up to do before you use your card reader in the field for the first time.
2. There are some settings on your mobile device that need to be enabled to make sure the card reader will work:
- Enable Bluetooth
- Enable the Jobber app to use your location settings.
- For Apple devices, navigate to your device's Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, then ensure location is allowed for the Jobber App.
- For Android devices, navigate to your device's Settings > Apps > Jobber. From here, ensure "Location" is enabled. Android devices also need to enable the "Nearby Devices" permission setting.
3. Navigate to an invoice in "awaiting payment" or "past due" status, and select Collect Payment. Select the Jobber Card reader as your payment method, then tap Collect Payment.
4. If your card reader isn't already turned on, you will now be prompted to turn your card reader on.
5. Next you will be asked to pair the card reader with your mobile device. Select Pair. Once connected, if your card reader requires an update it will start running automatically. The update will take roughly 5 minutes to complete.
Note
To ensure the card reader is ready to go, we recommend pairing your device during your initial set up so that the update is completed prior to collecting a payment in the field.
Card readers run off of their own battery so we suggest charging the device once a day. Card readers take approximately three hours for the battery to charge to 100%. You can monitor the battery life of the card reader from the battery indicator in the bottom left corner of the app.
If you have any issues with the card reader, please reach out to our Success Team or check out our article on Card Reader Troubleshooting. A good first troubleshooting step is to make sure that you are on the most recent version of the app. You can check this by going to the app store on your device and checking if there is an update.
Use the card reader to collect payment
Once you have the card reader set up, when you select Collect Payment on invoices or when collecting a deposit on quotes in the Jobber App, you will have an option to select Jobber Card Reader as the Payment method.
You will then be prompted to turn your card reader on, and once the app and card reader are connected you will be prompted to swipe, tap, or insert the client's card.
Your account can be set up automatically to send receipts after each transaction. This setting can be found on jobber.com when you go to the Gear Icon > Settings > Jobber Payments > Settings.

Card reader updates
Jobber Payments is powered by Stripe. Stripe maintains the software that the Jobber card reader uses. When not in use, the readers receive updates automatically from Stripe.
To automatically update your card reader's software, leave your card reader connected to power overnight as the updates happen at midnight in your timezone. If the card reader is left unplugged overnight, an update may start when it is turned back on. To manually check for an update, reboot the card reader.
