Overview

Check Scan lets your clients scan a paper check in client hub to fill in their bank details for a bank payment (ACH). Your clients don’t have to type their routing and account numbers, and Check Scan never deposits or cashes the check.

Check Scan availability

Check Scan is a Jobber Lab. It’s available to a limited number of accounts that join the Check Scan for Bank Payments Lab. Like every Jobber Lab, Check Scan is experimental. It may change while it’s in the Lab, and the Lab may end at any time.

To use Check Scan, you need Jobber Payments set up, with bank payments (ACH) turned on. Bank payments are only available to businesses in the United States.

Join the Check Scan Jobber Lab

To turn on Check Scan for your account in Jobber on the web:

  1. Click the Gear Icon, then select Jobber Labs.
  2. Locate the Check Scan for Bank Payments Lab, then select Turn On.
  3. Check the boxes to acknowledge how the Lab works.

After you join, the Check Scan option appears in client hub on every invoice and quote deposit that accepts bank payments. You don’t need to change any settings on your quotes or invoices.

To leave the Lab, navigate to the Gear Icon, then select Jobber Labs. Then select Turn Off on the Check Scan for Bank Payments Lab.

How clients pay by scanning a check

Your clients use Check Scan in client hub, which opens in their web browser. They don’t need the Jobber app or any other app. Check Scan uses the device’s camera, so it’s easiest on a phone. It also works on a computer with a camera.

When your client pays an invoice or a quote deposit, they select Bank payment, then select Have a check? to start Check Scan.

Check Scan explains how it works, then asks for permission to use the device’s camera. The client selects Continue to Scan and holds their check up to the camera.

Next, the client reviews the details that Check Scan filled in: the account type, routing number, and account number. They enter the account holder’s full name as it appears on the check, and they can correct any detail that doesn’t match. To continue, they select Looks Good. To try again, they select Rescan Check.

Finally, the client authorizes the bank payment. Jobber Payments processes it the same way as any other bank payment (ACH).

How Check Scan handles your client’s check

Check Scan only reads the bank details from your client’s check. Here’s what that means for your client:

  • They don’t fill out the check. Check Scan reads the routing and account numbers printed along the bottom of the check, so a blank check works.
  • They keep the check. Check Scan doesn’t cash or deposit the check, so your client doesn’t mail it or hand it to you. Jobber Payments collects the payment electronically from their bank account.
  • Jobber never stores the check image. Check Scan uses the image only to read the bank details. You never see the image, and neither does anyone else.

Fees and payout timing for Check Scan payments

A payment made with Check Scan is a bank payment (ACH), so the standard Jobber Payments bank payment fee of 1% of the payment amount applies. Check Scan doesn’t add any other fee.

Check Scan makes it faster for your client to enter their bank details, but it doesn’t speed up the payment itself. Check Scan payments follow the standard bank payment processing and payout timeline. Bank payments typically take 4 business days to reach your bank account. Refunds, disputes, and failed payments also work the same way as for other bank payments (ACH).

What clients can do if they can’t scan a check

If your client can’t scan their check, they can still pay by bank payment in client hub in one of these ways:

  • Enter Manually: Type the routing number, account number, and other bank details by hand.
  • Use bank login to pay: Connect their bank account securely through Plaid. Learn how bank login works in client hub.

If Check Scan can’t find a camera on your client’s device, it shows a message and offers Enter Manually instead. If you accept card payments on the invoice or quote, your client can also pay with a card.
